Titanic Victim Reveals What Life is Like in the Spirit World

with 9 comments

What is the spirit world like? On the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic on April 15, 1912, William Thomas Stead, one of 1,514 souls who went down with the ship in the icy waters south of Newfoundland, communicates from beyond the watery grave.

Who Was William T. Stead?

William Thomas Stead

William Thomas Stead

William T. Stead (July 5, 1849 – April 15, 1912) was an early pioneer of investigative journalism. “He was also well known as a world peace advocate, an advocate of women’s rights, a defender of civil liberties,” and “a fighter for the deprived and oppressed.”

Stead became interested in Spiritualism in the late 1800s. In 1893 he founded Borderland, a Spiritualist quarterly in which he explored his interest in psychic research.

Stead claimed to be in receipt of messages from the spirit world, and, in 1892, to be able to produce automatic writing. His spirit contact was alleged to be the departed Julia Ames, an American temperance reformer and journalist whom he met in 1890 shortly before her death. In 1909 he established Julia’s Bureau where inquirers could obtain information about the spirit world from a group of resident mediums. …

Stead boarded the Titanic for a visit to the USA to take part in a peace congress at Carnegie Hall at the request of William Howard Taft. After the ship struck the iceberg, Stead helped several women and children into the lifeboats, in an act “typical of his generosity, courage, and humanity”. …

William T. Stead’s Request of Me

In the Spiritualist publication The Harbinger of Light of Melbourne, Australia, an article was published on June 1, 1912, titled, “What Life Really Is in the Spirit World.” A segment of this channeled communication is reproduced in E. W. Sprague’s Spirit Obsession: A False Doctrine and a Menace to Modern Spiritualism, which I just published for Kindle.

I happened to be editing a portion of Sprague’s book TODAY (April 14, 2012) when I encountered his quotation of William T. Stead’s communication from June 1912. I consider it uncanny that I came across the information precisely on the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the great ocean liner. (The ship struck the iceberg at 11:40 p.m. on the 14th and sank about 2:20 a.m. on the 15th.) When such synchronicities happen, they indicate to me the working of those in the afterlife. I strongly felt Mr. Stead in Spirit prompt me to write this post.

What William T. Stead Communicated from Beyond the Grave

From the spirit world, Stead communicated to a medium through automatic writing and gave his experience of entering spirit life that fateful night. Under the heading “A Great Republic” in the June 1, 1912, Harbinger of Light article he explains what he found in the spirit world.

Angelic beings had evidently been instructed to meet me, and every question I asked was answered by an angel guide into whose care I was placed. I wanted to see my dear ones on earth, and swiftly was carried to my home, only to find that for the moment no direct word could be given them…. I felt that I must work, work more than I had ever done when in the flesh, to spread the truth abroad of immortal life, that some way must be opened to me to tell of my delight and assure my beloved ones that all was well.

I asked to be taken back to my heavenly home, to be shown some way to get at these dark places. There it was explained to me that conditions have to be made for perfect communication, that machinery, so to speak, for sending messages through the ether had to be studied. Here, also, are schools of learning for those who needed instruction even in the rudiments of spiritual knowledge; here were vast enterprises that included work in glorious regions of which those in earth life and in the fog of material selfish thought can form no idea.

There were vast armies, it seemed to me, of advanced spirits setting forth on missions to other planets than ours, as well as worlds beyond our little solar system. The whole universe is alive with spiritual beings all under discipline, doing the behest of some supreme director whom I have not seen, but who seems in some way I have yet to learn an Invisible Force. All this I was shown by my director, and told that soon my work would be shown me, something that would put me in touch with those all over the world who were now engaged in spreading this great gospel. That much had to be learned by me, but that I could make a beginning at once.

It is the reality of the spiritual world and its nearness that I want first to impress on the world. Spite of death-dealing disasters, spite of the fact that every minute of your days some soul is passing on, the mass of people go on as if the life you are now living was the only one. They cannot conceive of a world that is more real and beautiful than earth, and yet entirely spiritual. There are here the realities of what is reflected only in earth life—flowers, trees, landscapes, and above all, a sense of youth and elasticity that no one can fully experience in the flesh, though humanity will grow gradually to a more spiritualized condition of the body.

Then here we realize what it is to be among our spiritual peers. The meetings in the homes of the great and enlightened ones who have passed over are beyond mortal understanding. It is something for me to be able to say this much so soon after entering the Promised Land. Later I shall tell you of the people I meet, of the matured plans for work on which I am to enter.

Meanwhile let everyone know there is no death, that my life is fuller and brighter and with limitless possibilities, that I had never really dreamed of. We live and move by virtue of the Love force of the universe. No need for food; we are filled with the life-giving force of the Universe, that subtle fluid that feeds every material thing. To be filled with it is life everlasting—the more you have of it in earth life the more you can appreciate heavenly things. It is the Love supernal of which you have a glimmering in the true loves of earth life. Here it radiates from advanced spirits, and there is communication of soul with soul that in your earth limitations can scarcely be comprehended. I am alive! alive! alive! forevermore! That is the burden of my message today.

What William T. Stead, Titanic Victim, Says from the Spirit World

Note the following points from Stead’s June 1912 after-death communication:

  • When you die, angels (loved ones in the spirit world) are there to meet you and answer your questions.
  • After you pass, you may visit your loved ones, wherever they may be, but may be unable to communicate with them only because you do not yet know how.
  • You’ll want to let your loved ones know of the glory of the spirit world and that all is well with you.
  • Communication from the spirit world (the astral realm) requires proper conditions and must be studied.
  • There are schools in the spirit world (just as we have here) that teach about spiritual knowledge and communication.
  • “Vast armies” of advanced spirits are on missions to other planets. Is this world’s spirit people the “extraterrestrials” of other worlds?
  • The whole universe is alive with spiritual beings under discipline, operating according to the plan of a Supreme Power.
  • This “spiritual world” is more real and more beautiful than earth, yet completely spiritual. It is much nearer than we realize.
  • Most people live as if this earthly life is the only one, when something greater lies beyond.
  • We will commune with our spiritual peers and enlightened beings on the other side.
  • There are mature plans for your eternal work waiting for you when you reach the heavenly realm.
  • There is no death. Life in the next world is “fuller and brighter and with limitless possibilities.”
  • Those in the next world live and move and have their being in the Love force of the universe, which is available to us even in this life.
  • Those who cross over are not dead, but alive—alive forevermore.

William T. Stead’s Anniversary Message Through Me Today (April 14, 2012)

My desire remains the same on this anniversary date of the sinking of that great ship, when many hundreds entered the waters only to be received into the warmth and light of this glorious world. Your loved ones are waiting for you.

My message to humanity remains unchanged: seek peace, love the truth, and know that your deeds will win for you what you enjoy in the next life, for it is a glorious world filled with wonders that can scarce be described. There is much to learn and to advance the cause of love in your world. Seek to learn these lessons now and spread them among all peoples of the world, that you might receive a warm welcome into the heavenly spheres.

When catastrophes occur, know that we here are not caught unaware but are ready to welcome those from a world of anguish into the heavenly joy and happiness that await, where sighing and tears are no more. Prepare yourself for this great transition, for it awaits everyone in due time.”

After Stead’s death, a group of his admirers founded the William T. Stead Memorial Center, a Spiritualist organization in Chicago. For more information, see God’s World.

  4. What happens to the truly evil and nasty people when they die though, are they nasty and disruptive in the afterlife too?

    • Thanks for your question, Theresa. There are few people with no redeeming qualities. But those like this may enter what is called the lower astral realms, described in Where Do We Go When We Die? Usually, these souls are too self-centered to learn how to interfere in the lives of others; they are typically stuck in their “own little world,” consumed by the negative thought habits they learned in physical life. But this state is not eternal. Just like the physically living, they can learn to forsake their negativity and move to happier, higher realms.
