Developing a Relationship with Higher Consciousness

If you have no working relationship with Higher Consciousness—what I call “Spirit”—but are interested in developing one, how do you go about making that connection? A passage from the Book of Hebrews fundamentally explains how.

And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.
–Hebrews 11:6 NIV

In this study I want to separate the spiritual principle revealed here from its religious trappings, because developing a relationship with the Universe has nothing to do with religion. But it does require faith.

Faith Required

The chapter leading up to this verse talks about faith. It begins with: “Now faith is the assurance (the confirmation, the title deed) of the things [we] hope for, being the proof of things [we] do not see and the conviction of their reality [faith perceiving as real fact what is not revealed to the senses]” (AMP).

Faith is a metaphysical concept that says you can hope for and believe in things that have not yet physically happened. Faith is, in fact, the power that brings them into manifestation.

When I order a book from Amazon.com and they send me an email saying my order is being processed, I have faith that what I cannot actually see is nonetheless underway. And when I receive the second email telling me my order has shipped, I believe that the seller has packaged the item and sent it on its way to me.

When I placed the order, did I know how it would be delivered to me (by UPS or the US Postal Service)? No. Nor do I know what day it will arrive. But I have faith that what I do not actually see is happening behind the scenes.

So, even though my physical senses have no proof, I believe my book is coming. (The emails are signs that help me to believe, but they are not the actual manifestation of what I’ve ordered.)

Hebrews 1 also talks about a man named Enoch. Enoch had a faith relationship with Higher Consciousness. He communicated with Spirit, and Spirit responded. He made requests in faith, and received physical manifestations in return. He ordered his life around this principle, what verses 5-6 call “pleasing God.”

Personifying Higher Consciousness as “God” strengthens the religious stranglehold on metaphysical concepts that work for everyone, regardless of church affiliation. So I’ll translate the phrase “please God” to “satisfy the requirements.”

Satisfying the Requirements

To form a metaphysical relationship with Spirit, you must satisfy the primary requirement of having faith. If you want to manifest things in the material world, you must begin by believing it’s possible to do so. In other words, you must be open-minded and willing to entertain ideas and possibilities without first having proof. In fact, it is the belief that you will receive a positive response from Higher Consciousness that eventually produces observable proof of your trust.

Actually, you must have faith in two things:

1. There is some form of Higher Consciousness.
2. This Higher Consciousness will respond to you if you reach out to it.

If you’ve never tried this before, how do you know it will work? You don’t—any more than I knew I would receive my first delivery from Amazon. But I tried it with an open mind and found out it the process is dependable.

Are you willing to entertain the notion that some form of Higher Consciousness—Spirit, the Universe, some intelligent energy—exists outside yourself? If so, you can develop an ongoing relationship of trust and continued interchange between you and that higher power.

Spirit Is a Rewarder

A simple test is to ask for something to manifest in your life: an opportunity, a situation, an item. Communicate to Spirit in whatever way makes sense to you. Project positive thoughts and imaginations that you have already received what you desire. Expressing gratitude that your request is already fulfilled also helps. Send these requests, these thoughts, out with faith that Higher Consciousness has heard you and is responding. I share an example of this process in The Geese and the Feather.

If you don’t see immediate results, don’t change your mind tomorrow or next week, saying “It’s not working.” Trust that it is. Believe that Spirit is a rewarder of those who diligently seek a metaphysical relationship that results in manifestation.

The word rewarder means “one who pays wages.” The Universe is a responsive energy, power, or being, if you will, that responds to specific requests made and upheld with faith. But you must earnestly seek this relationship and believe that you’ll receive a response to your request. Crave it. Demand it with confidence. Be joyous and thankful for the answer.

If you have never before experienced this type of responsive relationship with Higher Consciousness, you can. These principles hold true whatever you call it: the Universe, Spirit, God, spirit beings, angels, or your higher self. Believe that there is a higher power that can communicate. Make your request known in faith, and continue believing until it manifests. Then you’ll know that Spirit exists and rewards those who honor spiritual relationship.

The Benefits of Walking Uprightly

“For the Lord God is a sun and shield; the Lord will give grace and glory; no good thing will He withhold from those who walk uprightly.”

–Psalm 84:11 NKJ

What does it mean to “walk uprightly”? Let’s begin by defining all the key words from this passage:

• Sun—open, public light
• Shield—defense, cover, surrounding
• Glory—abundance, riches, honor, dignity, reputation
• Good—pleasant, agreeable, valuable
• Withhold—keep back, deny, hinder
• Walk—go, proceed, lead
• Uprightly—complete, whole, entire, sound, healthful, unimpaired, innocent, having integrity, what is complete or entirely in accord with truth and fact.

This verse is telling us that AS you “walk uprightly”—actively taking steps in faith to fulfill your purpose with integrity; surrendering completely, fully, sincerely, and wholeheartedly—God, who is Spirit, will be like sunshine to light your path, a shield to protect you on your way. God will give grace for your journey and provide the Spirit’s glorious presence. Spirit will supply all good things to meet your needs to fulfill your purpose.

What else will you get?

You Will Receive Illumination, Revelation, and Protection

If you conduct your life in such a way, endeavoring to remain honest with yourself and others, you will “tabernacle” with the Divine and dwell on God’s holy hill (Psalm 15:1-2). This speaks of spiritual communion that leads to an elevation of consciousness— revelation that furnishes the direction and guidance you need to make progress on your unique path.

God stores up a treasure of wisdom for the one who walks uprightly, shielding her, guarding her path and protecting her (Proverbs 2:7-8), ensuring that she walks safely and securely (Proverbs 10:9; 28:18) leading her along a straight course (Proverbs 3:6; 15:21).

You Will Receive Expanded Vision and Material Supply

“He who walks righteously and speaks uprightly, He who despises the gain of oppressions, Who gestures with his hands, refusing bribes, Who stops his ears from hearing of bloodshed, And shuts his eyes from seeing evil: He will dwell on high; His place of defense will be the fortress of rocks; Bread will be given him, water will be sure. Your eyes will see the King in His beauty; They will see the land that is very far off.”
–Isaiah 33:15-17 NKJ

By walking uprightly (stepping out in faith bravely, sincerely, and wholeheartedly), you will “dwell on the heights,” where you will experience an advantage in vision and enjoy the utmost safety and security, as in a fortress.

Bread (and the sustaining word of God—Matt 4:4) will be provided abundantly for your needs, and water (refreshment and insight) is certain.

You will encounter God in beauty, sweetness, pleasantness, joy.

You will see “the land that is very far off.” You will peer clairvoyantly into the future, knowing what lies ahead and where you are to go.

“Is the Spirit of the Lord restricted? … Do not My words do good to him who walks uprightly?” (Micah 2:7 NKJ) God will not restrict the Spirit’s prophetic word to those who walk uprightly. Spiritual direction and guidance are vital to fulfilling your purpose effectively.

Step Out for Direction and Support

A favorite passage of mine has always been:

“The steps of a [good] man are directed and established by the Lord when He delights in his way [and He busies Himself with his every step]. Though he falls, he shall not be utterly cast down, for the Lord grasps his hand in support and upholds him.”
–Psalm 37:23-24 AMP

You cannot steer a parked car; it must be moving to head one direction or the other. Likewise, if you want direction, you must begin to walk, to take steps.

As you walk uprightly, God is delighted and will attend your every step, directing you and protecting you. Even if you stumble, Spirit will support you and keep you on the path.

Shall We Dance?

When a couple waltzes, one must lead. Your partner, the Spirit of God, is feminine in principle and must be led. You can stand hand in hand, face to face, until the music is over—but if YOU do not step out and begin to dance, Spirit will not move! Only when you take the step and lead will Spirit accompany you and weave a beautiful rhythm and pattern into your future. (See James 4:8a.)
