BUILDING THE BRIDGE

Moving consciousness from here to the future

The Principles of Spiritualism: My Interpretation

with one comment

Spiritualism endorses nine principles, which were formulated, amended, and revised over the course of a century.

The following are the definitions adopted by the National Spiritualist Association of Churches along with my understanding of them.

1. We believe in Infinite Intelligence.

Infinite Intelligence is the governing force in the universe, whether it is called God or Life or Supreme Consciousness. It is infinite—existing from the eternal past into the endless future. It is the consciousness known as Creator and from which all things, both material and spiritual, spring.

2. We believe that the phenomena of Nature, both physical and spiritual, are the expression of Infinite Intelligence.

The nature of the created universe is material and spiritual. These expressions are both the design and manifestation of Supreme Consciousness, which pervades all things on every plane.

3. We affirm that a correct understanding of such expression, and living in accordance therewith, constitute true religion.

True religion consists of understanding the previous two principles and living in harmony with that understanding: not breaking the laws of this nature, but actively promoting them and using them to the advancement of Infinite Intelligence. Following such a path will unfold our highest purpose. “Obedience to God’s laws is the highest form of worship.”

4. We affirm that the existence and personal identity of the individual continue after the change called death.

Physical life in the body is only one phase of the life of a human entity. The being that entered the physical stage continues to exist after the transition called death, maintaining its individual personal identity in the Spirit realm.

5. We affirm that communication with the so-called dead is a fact, scientifically proven by the phenomena of Spiritualism.

Communication of those yet in the physical phase of life with those who have transitioned into Spirit is a reality. Such communication has been and continues to be proved through scientifically verifiable methods by spiritualistic phenomena.

6. We believe that the highest morality is contained in the Golden Rule: “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.”

The supreme morality we are to attain to, an aspect of true religion, is espoused by Jesus the Christ: “Do to others as you would have them do to you.” This is an active blessing that puts the best interest of others on par with your own, even if we must turn the other cheek to do so.

7. We affirm the moral responsibility of individuals, and that we make our own happiness or unhappiness as we obey or disobey Nature’s physical and spiritual laws.

Each person is responsible for striving to demonstrate the Golden Rule and to advocate true religion in action by obeying the natural law of the second and third principles. If one fails, he or she alone is responsible for it and can blame no one else for the unhappiness that may ensue.

8. We affirm that the doorway to reformation is never closed against any soul here or hereafter.

There are no hopeless cases. No matter the character of an individual in this life, he or she can change for the better—if not in this life, then in Spirit.

9. We affirm that the precepts of Prophecy and Healing are Divine attributes proven through Mediumship.

Prophecy and healing are divine communications, ministered through mediumship. They are present in many religions.
